WE LANDED IN THE Forest of Dean, on—oh, let’s call it a Saturday. Sweeping oaks, wildflowers, and verdant green were all in evidence. A fox paused mid-amble, and a squirrel squatted on tiny fat haunches as nature’s finest avian ensemble serenaded us.
But this was no picnic. This bucolic vision was simply a brief stopover from the 23rd century. I was a Premier Assigned Scout from the Quantum Diagnostic Corporation, piloting Earth’s first-time manipulator, Gaia 1V, on its virgin flight. My mission: to reverse nature’s greatest evolutionary crime and return home as a superhero or not at all.
And what was that evolutionary crime? Cheating me, Mai’chaels of Arturo City, of my rightful place on a mission into the past. You see, the future is conscience-driven, and the Corporation puts each candidate applying to be a time-scout under rigorous ethics and morality testing. Their motto is: Nobility Conquers Adversity.
